Does Notion Import OneNote? No. Here Is What Works Instead
No. Notion's Import menu has importers for apps like Evernote, Confluence, Trello, and Asana, and it accepts files such as Word, HTML, Markdown, PDF, and ZIP. OneNote is not on the list, and Notion will not open a .onepkg or .one file (Notion Help: Import data into Notion). To get OneNote content into Notion, you either turn it into one of those file types first, or use a tool that reads OneNote through your Microsoft account and writes the pages into Notion for you. For a few pages of plain text, the file route is fine. For a notebook whose sections, attachments, and handwriting you want to keep, a direct migration saves you most of the cleanup.
Why the search results do not settle it
If you have already searched for this, you probably found three kinds of answers: Notion's help page, which does not mention OneNote; a Reddit thread that tells you to go through Obsidian; and a handful of migration tools. Each one is right about something. None of them tells you what your notebook will look like once it lands in Notion, which is the part you actually care about. Are the sections still sections? Is the handwriting from last semester still there? Did the PDFs come along?
That depends on the route.
The three routes, side by side
| Export to Word or PDF, then import | Obsidian Importer, then import to Notion | Direct migration (Note Bridge) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What you do | Export each section or page from OneNote, then import the files into Notion | Pull the notebook into an Obsidian vault as Markdown, zip it, import the ZIP into Notion | Sign in to Microsoft and Notion, pick pages, let it run |
| What you need | OneNote for Windows desktop for Word or section exports. The Mac app saves one page at a time as PDF | Obsidian and its Importer plugin | A browser |
| Notebook structure | Lost. You rebuild sections as Notion pages yourself | Kept as folders, then as nested pages | Each notebook and section becomes a Notion page with your notes inside |
| Handwriting | PDF keeps it as part of the page. Word usually needs cleanup | Kept in Obsidian. In my test it did not survive the Notion import | Kept, as one image at the bottom of each page |
| Attachments | PDF shows icons, not files. Word is hit or miss | In my test they did not survive the Notion import | Uploaded to Notion, up to 5 MB each |
| Notion's own limits | 5 MB per file on Free (50 MB for Word on paid plans, 20 MB for PDF) | 5 MB per file on Free, and about 120 Markdown file imports every 12 hours | Not the importer's. Notion's API pace applies instead |
| Cost | Free | Free | 20 pages free, then priced by page count |
The Notion limits come from Notion's import help page. The export details are covered step by step in How to Export OneNote in 2026, and the Obsidian test, with screenshots of what broke, is in my OneNote to Notion guide.
Which route fits you
You have a few pages, mostly text
Export them. Word keeps the text editable, and Notion turns a .docx into a page. Expect to fix anything with an unusual layout: Notion says comments, tracked changes, and advanced Word layouts do not carry over. If a page matters for how it looks rather than what it says, import the PDF instead, or just keep the PDF next to your Notion notes.
This is also the right route if you would rather not connect your Microsoft account to any outside app.
You also want a Markdown copy of everything
Go through Obsidian. You get a local vault you own, and you can import it into Notion afterwards. Plan for cleanup on the Notion side. When I tried it, the ZIP hit Notion's 5 MB Free limit almost at once, and ink drawings and audio came through as broken links.
You have hundreds of pages, sections you rely on, or handwriting and files
This is the case a direct migration is built for. Note Bridge reads your notebooks through Microsoft's API, rebuilds the notebook and section structure under a Notion page you choose, and uploads images, attachments, and audio as real Notion blocks. You do not handle any files.
It does not fit everyone:
- A work or school account whose admin will not approve outside apps. Many organizations make new apps wait for admin approval before the Microsoft sign-in goes through. If that approval is not going to happen, use the export route.
- Password-protected sections. These are skipped. Unlock them in OneNote before you start.
- Pages where position is the point, such as a diagram of boxes and arrows drawn on the canvas. Notion pages run top to bottom, so the arrangement does not survive any route except PDF. What gets lost moving OneNote to Notion covers each of these cases.
- More than 5,000 pages in one go. The self-serve plans stop there. Larger moves go through Custom Migration.
What a direct migration costs
Every new account gets 20 free page credits, so you can try your most awkward section before paying anything. After that you pay once per migration, based on how many pages you select: $9 for up to 200 pages, $29 for 1,500, and $79 for 5,000. Between those points the price scales with the page count, so 300 pages costs $10.54 rather than jumping to the next plan. If a page still fails after the automatic retries, its page credit goes back to your account.
FAQ
Can I import a .onepkg file into Notion?
No. .onepkg is not one of the file types Notion accepts. Export the sections to Word or PDF first, or use a tool that reads OneNote directly.
Can I move OneNote to Notion from a Mac?
Yes, but not by exporting. The Mac app can only save single pages as PDF, and OneNote for the web has no export. A direct migration runs in the browser, so it works from a Mac.
Is it safe to connect my Microsoft account?
Note Bridge asks Microsoft for read-only access to your notes (Notes.Read), so it cannot change or delete anything in OneNote. Images and files pass through temporary storage while a page is written and are removed once that page is done. Page titles kept for your migration report are cleared after 15 days.
Does it work with Microsoft 365 work or school accounts?
Yes, if your organization allows it. Many organizations require an admin to approve new apps, and Microsoft shows an approval message until they do.
Will my OneNote notebook change after the migration?
No. The migration only reads from OneNote. Your notebooks stay where they are, so you can compare the two side by side for as long as you like.
Skip the export and write to Notion directly
